Beach Break

Also known as: Sand-bottom Break

A beach break is a surf spot where waves break over a sandy bottom rather than reef or rock. Sandbars are shaped by currents, storms, and seasonal swell, so beach breaks can be completely different week to week — a peak that's pumping on Monday might be a closeout by Friday. Beach breaks are usually the most beginner-friendly type of wave because wipeouts land on sand, but they can also host world-class barrels when the right sandbar lines up with a clean groundswell. Most of the East Coast, Gulf Coast, and much of California are dominated by beach breaks.
